Thomas Fersen – C’Est Tout Ce Qu’Il Me Reste (2019)

Thomas Fersen’s music always reminds me of Paris and his mannerisms and lyrics are incredibly Parisian. I’ve had the album on repeat for the past week, which is a good mix of high energy tracks and more mellow ones, with his very personal storytelling and unusual songs.

C’est tout ce qu’il me reste is a thoroughly enjoyable album and showcases Fersen’s sense of humour, with some songs that actually made me laugh out loud. It’s a real treat if you understand French, or if you’re learning French.

Top 5 Songs:

  • C’est Tout Ce Qu’il Me Reste
  • Mes Parents Sont Pas Là
  • Les Vieilles
  • Le Vrai Problème
  • Les Zombies Du Cimetière (Maybe tie with Richelieus)

Insights into a few songs:

On “Les Vieilles” he revisits the time of his adolescence and delivers a hilarious take on being interested in a girl who was 18 while he was 16, telling her to make her feel at ease that “he likes old ladies”.

On “Mes Parents Sont Pas Là” being a high-schooler again he explains how maths are as easy as breathing for him and invites a girl to his place to prepare for an exam, while his parents are away in the countryside.

On “C’est Tout Ce Qu’il Me Reste”, the title-track and perhaps the apex of the album he is a 40 years old virgin who dearly holds on the his only pair of underpants, inherited from his father who also inherited it from his, and that it’s the only thing he has left. If he loses it, he has nothing left. Another hilarious song, full of energy and drama.

There are other really funny songs, “Mange Mes Poux” where a monkey suggests to another monkey to eat his lice instead of dinner, “Les Zombies du Cimetière” where he encounters zombies rising from their graves, “Le Vrai Problème” which depicts the difficulties of dating a billionaire who wants to give him a car and has “different problems than he does” and how he doesn’t want anyone to clean his shoes, “Richelieus” where a cat give him the power to understand cat talk and gives him cat mannerisms (he adopts their customs and licks his shoes and suit), on “King-Kong” he reflects on King-Kong’s misunderstood sensitive and gentle nature, who didn’t like fighting but, like him liked girls.

If you want to try something different, give this album a spin and let me know if you liked it. It’s a very unique style and really grows on you.
